Transformers & Rectifiers (India) Ltd. began its journey in 1981 under the leadership of Mr. Jitendra U. Mamtora, starting from transformer repair work and gradually moving into manufacturing 33 kV to 66 kV class transformers. This foundational decade established TARIL’s engineering competence and laid the groundwork for future expansion. Over these years, TARIL evolved from a small-scale repair unit into a promising transformer manufacturer backed by strong technical vision. This period planted the seeds of innovation that would later lead to major breakthroughs such as the 1200 kV transformer and 420 kV ester-filled reactors. The company’s early focus on quality engineering, customer trust, and indigenous development began shaping its legacy as one of India’s most respected transformer manufacturers.

This era marked TARIL’s transition into large-scale manufacturing with the commissioning of its state-of-the-art Changodar plant, enabling production of up to 110 kV class transformers and eventually expanding to 245 kV class. The company continued achieving turnaround milestones, becoming the dominant force in India’s furnace transformer market, capturing nearly 80% of the domestic share. This phase firmly positioned TARIL as a trusted supplier for India’s growing power and industrial sectors, supported by its increasing technical capability and infrastructure investments.

TARIL entered the 245 kV Extra High Voltage (EHV) space, strengthening its technical stature. Key achievements included: - Manufacturing its first 7.5 MVA series reactor for Danieli, UK, with 105 kA short-circuit withstand capability. - Supplying its first 100 MVA, 220 kV power transformer. - Receiving NTPC & PGCIL approvals, enabling utility-scale deployments. - Developing 25/30 MVA EAF transformers for Azerbaijan. This period also strengthened TARIL’s specialization in EAF transformers, traction transformers, and mission-critical power equipment, solidifying its role in national utility networks.

During this transformative phase, TARIL: - Became publicly listed on NSE and BSE (2007). - Received the ‘Star Export House’ certificate from the Govt. of India. - Successfully executed 315 MVA, 400 kV power transformers. - Delivered the 1200 kV class auto transformer for the PGCIL pilot project—one of India’s milestone achievements in UHV technology. These achievements elevated TARIL into the top tier of India’s transformer manufacturers.

This phase was defined by global collaborations and high-voltage breakthroughs: - Strategic alliance with ZTR Ukraine for 765 kV transformers. - Technology Licensing Agreement with Fuji Electric Co. Ltd. for 400 & 765 kV shunt reactors. - Supply of 500 MVA, 400 kV transformers to leading SEBs. - Successful manufacturing and testing of 765 kV class transformers. - 1st Unit of 765 kV Class of Transformers was successfully tested and commissioned. - India’s highest-rating 75 MVA, 115 kV green transformer using natural ester fluid. - Short-circuit testing of 315 MVA, 400/220/33 kV auto transformers at KEMA Netherlands. These years reinforced TARIL’s leadership in the high-voltage and UHV segments. These advancements strengthened TARIL’s credibility in high-voltage engineering across global markets.

A period of significant technical milestones: - Successfully commissioned India’s first 1200 kV transformer at PGCIL. - Executed 80 green transformers using natural ester fluids. - Developed & manufactured 170 MVA EAF transformers for the MENA region. - Advanced green technology adoption in line with global sustainability trends. These achievements expanded TARIL’s global standing in high-voltage engineering.
